Sahih Muslim Book Of Menstruation Hadith 525
The Sahih Muslim is one of the six major collections of hadith, or sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), in Islam. It was compiled by Imam Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, who died in 875 CE. The Sahih Muslim contains over 7,000 hadiths, divided into 54 books and many chapters. One of these books is the Book of Menstruation, which deals with the rulings and etiquette related to the menstrual period of women.

Hadith 525 is one of the hadiths in the Book of Menstruation. It is narrated by Umm Salama, one of the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him). She said:
"I said: Messenger of Allah, I am a woman who has closely plaited hair on my head; should I undo it for taking a bath, because of sexual intercourse? He (the Holy Prophet) said: No, it is enough for you to throw three handfuls of water on your head and then pour water over yourself, and you shall be purified."
This hadith shows that a woman who has sexual intercourse with her husband does not need to undo her plaited hair for taking a bath (ghusl), as long as she washes her head properly with water. This is a concession and a mercy from Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) for the women, especially those who have long or thick hair that may be difficult to undo and redo.
However, this hadith does not apply to the case of menstruation. A woman who menstruates must undo her plaited hair for taking a bath (ghusl), according to the majority of scholars. This is based on another hadith in the same book, narrated by Umm 'Atiyya, who said:
"We did not consider yellowish discharge after termination of menses (as menses). In case any one amongst us had hair closely plaited, she did not open it. She poured water over her head and rubbed it vigorously till it reached the roots of her hair."
This hadith indicates that a woman who has plaited hair must open it and wash it thoroughly when she takes a bath (ghusl) after her menstrual period ends. This is because the menstrual blood may remain in her hair or scalp, and she needs to purify herself completely from it.
Therefore, we can understand that there is a difference between the rulings of ghusl for sexual intercourse and ghusl for menstruation. A woman who has sexual intercourse can keep her plaited hair as it is, while a woman who menstruates must undo her plaited hair and wash it well.
This is an example of how the hadiths in the Sahih Muslim provide us with guidance and wisdom on various aspects of our lives. We should study them carefully and follow them faithfully, as they are authentic reports from the best of creation, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
