other collections at the university of pennsylvania relate to eadweard muybridge. at the beginning of the twentieth-century, the university recorder, george e. nitzsche, conducted considerable research in documenting muybridges work and activities while at the university. his papers can be found in upa 9. the dr. william pepper papers at the walter h. and leonore annenberg rare book and manuscript library of the university of pennsylvania contain additional material.
muybridge was an american photographer who was best known for his photographs of humans in motion. he explored his ideas for "zoopraxography" by developing a camera that was able to take twenty-four exposures for a single image. muybridge photographed humans from at least 1875 until 1891, when he fell off a chair on march 30, 1891. he contracted an infection which led to a slow death.
muybridge was born of english and scottish ancestry. he received his early education in england and, at the age of 19, he sailed for the united states. in 1879, he was appointed professor of physiology and director of the san francisco physical culture station, resigning in 1881 when he was appointed professor of physiology and director of the zoological gardens at stanford university. following a disagreement with stanford university about zoopraxography, he took a job as an explorer and photographer in the indian territory. after seeing the 1887 paris exposition, where he was impressed by the photographing of humans in motion, muybridge agreed to build a zoopraxographic apparatus.
muybridge shot 128,000 photographs with his zoopraxographic apparatus, which took twenty-four successive photographs of a scene. in the resulting images, many people appear to be in motion, but the illusion is created by separating the images on a strip of film. he acquired the nickname "muybridge" for this reason, although his friends called him "jumping jim." the zoopraxographical apparatus enabled muybridge to make successful, systematic studies of the motion of waterfowl, deer and human beings. his work, "animal locomotion: a study of the kinematics and mechanism of ten animals" (1880), was the first book in the field. it is the first detailed analysis of animal motion and has been called the "foundation of modern zoology." the outcome of his experiments was 89b5f6a1514 edcbe 3d9ccd7d82
