Gameplay - Still MVP or a Step Back?

MLB The Show 25 continues to build upon the solid foundation that the series has established over the years, but does it improve the gameplay enough to remain the MVP of baseball video games? In my opinion, MLB The Show 25 absolutely mlb the show stubsdelivers a refined and engaging baseball experience, but it doesn't stray too far from the tried-and-true formula we've seen in past years.

1. Improved Batting and Pitching Mechanics

The gameplay improvements this year are most notable in the batting and pitching mechanics. The hitting feels more responsive than ever before. The new input system provides a more accurate representation of a player's swing, with more precise control over bat speed and direction. If you're someone who loves to line drive or hit for power, this new system makes it easier to execute those different approaches.

Pitching has also seen a few tweaks. The precision meter has been slightly overhauled, which gives a more satisfying feeling of controlling the ball's placement on the field. With the added feedback from the batter’s swings, the entire pitching experience feels more rewarding. Plus, new pitches have been added for each pitcher, and there’s a deeper sense of individual player uniqueness in their pitch types, speeds, and movements.

2. Fielding and Base Running

Fielding in MLB The Show 25 remains as solid as ever, though some may argue that it still lacks the depth of other modern sports games when it comes to detailed fielding mechanics. The responsiveness of throwing to bases is noticeably improved, and it’s easier to execute double plays. However, there are still moments where your fielder feels a little stiff, and you’ll sometimes miss a catch that you felt should have been made.

Base running, on the other hand, has seen some much-needed adjustments. The decision-making when it comes to stealing bases or going from first to third is quicker, and the AI has become sharper in defending against base runners. While it’s still not perfect, it is a vast improvement over previous versions, giving you more realistic opportunities to challenge the opposing team’s defense.

3. Overall Feel

In terms of gameplay, MLB The Show 25 doesn’t drastically change what made the franchise great, but it refines the formula enough to make it feel fresh. It's still a fantastic, fun game that offers a great balance between arcade action and simulation baseball. The increased responsiveness of player movements and the more strategic aspects of gameplay ensure it remains the top baseball video game on the market. For baseball fans, this iteration should absolutely be considered MVP material.
